Distinguish the uses of the name

Discussion of Machiavelli’s political ideas is a historical or philosophical task. Machiavellianism in personality research is a construct measured with particular instruments. Using the same name does not make them interchangeable.

Do not equate strategy with manipulation

Planning ahead, understanding incentives, and anticipating consequences can be ordinary responsible conduct. Deception and exploitation concern the means used and their effects, not merely whether a person is strategic.

Use the practical question

Ask whether the relevant facts are represented accurately, the affected person can evaluate the request, and the plan respects applicable responsibilities. A sophisticated explanation does not remove the need for these checks.
