Research and interpretation
What is Dark Triad personality?
Dark Triad personality research examines narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. Understanding these traits can inform questions about manipulation and relationships; it cannot settle an individual’s diagnosis or motives.
The three constructs
The Dark Triad groups narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. Paulhus and Williams examined their overlap and differences in a 2002 personality study. The term describes a research framework, rather than a single diagnosis.
| Construct | Research focus | Keep distinct from |
|---|---|---|
| Narcissism | Grandiose self-regard and entitlement | Healthy confidence |
| Machiavellianism | Manipulative, self-interested interpersonal orientation | Planning or strategic intelligence |
| Psychopathy | Callousness and impulsive tendencies | Courage or composure |
What the framework can tell you
Research measures allow investigators to examine trait variation and associations across groups. A finding about a sample is not an individualized prediction. People differ in circumstances, behavior, and how accurately they report themselves.
What it cannot settle
Neither a brief quiz nor a difficult interaction establishes another person's diagnosis, intent, dangerousness, or future behavior. This site's practical tools are educational prompts, not validated assessments.
Start with conduct
For a real-world decision, describe the request or event, examine available records, consider alternatives, and assess the consequences. Repeated pressure or deception can justify safeguards without a personality verdict.
