Dark Triad and Dark Tetrad: what changes?

The fourth construct is everyday sadism; the framework still has limits.

Educational perspective

What the fourth trait adds

The Dark Tetrad adds everyday sadism to narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. In a UBC interview, Delroy Paulhus describes sadism in terms of seeking enjoyment from others’ suffering.

A concept is not a verdict

The addition helps define a research question. It does not mean a brief quiz, an insulting comment, or an unpleasant disagreement establishes sadism in an individual.

Keep behavior distinct from entertainment

Do not infer a person’s cruelty or dangerousness from a preference for fiction, games, or intense entertainment. A consequential concern should be grounded in conduct and context.

Practical decisions do not require a fourth label

Repeated humiliation, threats, or deliberately harmful actions can be evaluated on their evidence. Clarify the impact, preserve relevant records appropriately, and seek qualified help when stakes or safety warrant it.
