Men, identity, and judgment

Success is not a personality diagnosis

Separate achievement from assumptions about the traits that caused it.

Educational perspective

Start with the outcome you can establish

Income, professional status, sporting achievement, and popularity are different outcomes. They do not by themselves show why someone succeeded or whether the method was ethical, repeatable, or sustainable.

Consider competing explanations

Experience, skill, opportunity, resources, support, persistence, timing, and luck may contribute. A flattering personality narrative should not displace these possibilities without evidence.

Examine the costs as well as the gains

A career achievement can coexist with damaged relationships or poor judgment in other areas. Likewise, a person can exercise courage or sound judgment without scoring highly on Dark Triad traits.

Define an accountable standard

Choose what success would mean across work, relationships, health, and responsibility. Review actual behavior and consequences rather than turning a trait label into permission to dominate or mislead.
