Research and interpretation
Narcissism: traits, labels, and behavior
Confidence, entitlement, and clinical diagnosis are different questions.
What the term refers to
In Dark Triad research, narcissism typically concerns grandiose self-regard and entitlement. This is not interchangeable with a clinical diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder.
Avoid shortcuts
Confidence, ambition, criticism sensitivity, or a disagreement alone cannot establish narcissism. Describe the specific conduct and its context before interpreting a personality pattern.
Ask practical questions
Are agreements honored? Can concerns be raised without retaliation? Is responsibility acknowledged when reliable evidence is presented? These questions support decisions about the interaction; they do not diagnose the person.
