Adult ADHD, exhaustion, and concentration problems

Difficulty focusing has several possible explanations; an evaluation should examine the history.

Educational perspective

Do not diagnose from fatigue alone

Stress, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, and other health conditions can resemble aspects of ADHD. NIMH emphasizes the need for a thorough evaluation rather than relying on one symptom or an online narrative.

History and impairment matter

An ADHD assessment considers symptoms beginning in childhood, their presence across settings, and interference with functioning. Current difficulties need to be understood in that context, rather than assuming that professional achievement proves or disproves ADHD.

Prepare useful examples

Describe missed obligations, organization problems, distractibility, restlessness, or impulsive decisions with specific examples and dates where possible. Include sleep, mood, medical changes, and relevant earlier school or family history.

Let the findings guide the plan

A clinician can consider alternative or co-occurring conditions and treatment options. Organizational strategies may be useful, but their usefulness does not itself validate a diagnosis.
