How to recognize and respond to financial exploitation

Pressure, secrecy, urgency, and concentrated financial control deserve careful verification—not speculative diagnoses.

Common circumstances warranting scrutiny

Requests for immediate transfers or loans, demands for secrecy, repeated unexplained borrowing, pressure to share passwords, or sudden changes in access to joint resources can create significant risk. Each may have multiple explanations; independent documentation helps establish facts.

Protect decision quality

Do not make consequential financial commitments under artificial time pressure. Independently confirm identities, account details, contract terms, and obligations through established channels rather than numbers or links supplied by the requester.

Preserve practical safeguards

Maintain independent access to records where lawfully appropriate, use strong authentication, review account activity, and keep copies of relevant documents. When suspicious transactions occur, promptly contact the institution through its official channels.

Know when specialized help is required

Potential fraud, exploitation of a vulnerable adult, significant debt, identity theft, or legal disputes may require qualified financial, legal, or consumer-protection assistance. A psychological education site cannot determine rights or recover funds.

A note on uncertainty: These frameworks cannot establish another person's diagnosis or intent. The appropriate next step depends on facts, context, and safety.
